Scallop Monitoring Program
Sarasota County has partnered with the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) and Albritton Farms in placing scallop monitoring traps in bays throughout the county. The traps consist of a marker float and fruit bag with a Vexar plastic liner which is attached to a half cinder block. The bag has a small doughnut float attached to maintain the bag in a vertical position. The drifting scallop spat attach themselves to the Vexar liner. The bags with liners are collected every other month and taken to FWRI for laboratory analysis. FWRI has provided the technical knowledge and the bulk of the materials. Albritton Farms provided the fruit bags. The County has provided staff resources, equipment and the balance of the materials. As our supplies are expended we will need to replenish our resources. In addition to expendables, the saltwater environmental quickly deteriorates the marker floats and lines or we lose traps to boat propeller strikes.
