Scallop Seeding Program
Sarasota County has partnered with Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) to place scallop seeding cages throughout the county. We have already placed scallop monitoring traps in bays throughout the county. Our plan is to place scallop seeding cages in areas that correspond to the locations where the monitoring traps are located. This way we can monitor the success of the seeding program. The cages, with live scallops, are set out under the volunteers dock. Each month the volunteer will use the common hand tools provided to maintain the cages and collect data. The goal is to return to the days when we had a thriving scallop fishery. We have started this project because the environmental conditions are ripe for success. We have had little red tide over the last couple of years which has allowed the population to make a comeback. This is a good opportunity, while environmental conditions are favorable, for a successful scallop seeding program.
