Oysters were first mapped in seventeen Sarasota County coastal creeks: Whitaker, Hudson, and Elligraw Bayous; and Phillippi, Matheny, Clower, Catfish, North, South, Shakett, Curry, Hatchett, Alligator, Woodmere, Forked, Gottfried, and Ainger Creeks. The original goal of the project was to locate and identify all oyster habitat types and devise a method to record their location. For the creeks, it was also to determine how far upstream oysters occurred. Aerial maps of the creeks were created and laminated. Staff used permanent markers to draw and code the oyster habitat types directly on the maps. The data was then transferred to maps in ARCGIS for storage, management, and analysis.
